Venturing into the world of investment management can seem daunting. This domain has become so versatile that it can look formidable to outsiders. But it does not have to be so! We will help you build your knowledge starting with basics all the way to advanced concepts through a series of 9 essential and 3 optional tutorials. We aim to help you acquire the required proficiency to build on any concept in investment management. 

Tutorials

In this section, we list the main tutorials that compose the Investment Manager Track. There are 9 essential tutorials, which are presented in this section, and 3 optional ones, which are presented in the next section.

3.1 Introduction to Securities and Investments

This tutorial serves as an introduction to the world of investment management. It explores various asset classes, market players, the main investment principles behind the investment process and trends in investment management.

3.2 The Basics of Investment Management



This tutorial digs deeper into mainstream financial assets, namely fixed income securities and equities. It also delves into the intricacies and mechanics of security trading, and the essential concepts of risk, return and their trade-off.

3.3 Equity Analysis and Market Structure




The first part of this tutorial discusses stock valuation, exploring some of the most popular models (DDM, DCF, the Earnings Multiplier or PE Ratio approach). It also investigates the required rate of return and the dividend growth rate. The second part discusses the various types of financial markets, market microstructure and stock market indices.

3.4 Fixed Income Analysis and Market Structure

The first part of this tutorial covers the foundations of fixed income analysis, e.g., interest rates and yield curve analysis as well as bond valuation. It also investigates the risks associated with fixed-income investments. The second part discusses the various types of financial markets, market microstructure and bond markets.

3.5 Portfolio Management



This tutorial is divided into 3 main parts: Portfolio Theory and Modelling, Asset Pricing Models and Portfolio Performance Evaluation. It covers foundational concepts such as portfolio risk and return, correlation and diversification. It also discusses more advanced concepts in asset pricing, such as CAPM. It closes with an exploration of risk, and non-risk, adjusted portfolio performance measures.

3.6 Introduction to ESG and Sustainable Investing

This tutorial is divided into 2 parts: ESG Fundamentals, and ESG and Sustainable Investing. It presents an overview of important definitions and foundational concepts in the ESG space, such as frameworks, reporting standards, regulation and rating. It also describes the ESG investment process and explores existing ESG financial products and funds.

3.7 Active and Passive Portfolio Management

This tutorial discusses two broad approaches in portfolio management: passive and active investing. It starts with explaining basic definitions and foundational concepts, followed with the specifics of active and passive investing in equity as well as bond portfolio management. It closes with a brief overview of error tracking.

3.8 Introduction to Derivatives

This tutorial serves as a gentle introduction to financial derivatives. It explores the four main types of financial derivatives, namely, options, forward contracts, futures and swaps.  Basic characteristics, foundational concepts and illustrating examples for each type are presented in a straightforward and accessible manner.

3.9 Macroeconomic Analysis

This tutorial serves as an introduction to macroeconomics. It explores fundamental analysis, monetary and fiscal policies, macroeconomic indicators and the relationship between the stock market and the economy.

Do I need any prerequisite knowledge?

We have made sure, when designing this track, to cover investment from the bottom up. In principle, all you would need is basic high school mathematics.

Will this track prepare me to be a trader?

No. This is not the aim of this track. If you are only interested in trading, you should study web content and tutorials that specialise in technical or fundamental analysis.
